From Newcomer to Expert: Kritika’s Growth at Airwallex

Kritika and a colleague

Tell us about yourself, Kritika.

I’m a Senior Solutions Engineer at Airwallex. I love my job at Airwallex because it combines my passions for technology, complex problem-solving, and helping customers.

I enjoy being the bridge between technology and people, ensuring clients not only get the right solution, but also feel supported along the way.

Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, cooking, yoga.

I recently joined our SF office run club where I ran my first 10k with my coworkers, which was fun but challenging!
You joined Airwallex without a payments background. How did your manager and team support you in your first months, and what helped you become a subject-matter expert in the field?

My leaders and teammates were instrumental in my early days. My Director, Aziza, spent hours walking me through both the payments landscape and how payments are uniquely handled at Airwallex. My manager, Meet, created a safe space where I could ask even the simplest questions, which really accelerated my learning.

At the same time, I made self-learning a big part of my journey. I relied heavily on AI tools to break down complex concepts, research industry trends, and quickly get up to speed on payment fundamentals. Pairing that curiosity with hands-on projects gave me a way to connect theory with practice.

I also joined ‌Airwallex’s mentorship program, which paired me with an experienced payments leader, Nicole, who has been invaluable in helping me navigate the payments industry and also my career growth.

What were some of the biggest turning points or opportunities that accelerated your development?

Specializing in Payment Acquiring, the part of our product that lets businesses accept and process customer card payments, from the start allowed me to take ownership of projects while figuring things out along the way. I took on several larger enterprise customers and quickly became familiar with the nuances of the product, eventually becoming the subject matter expert in my region. When the demand from Small & Medium Enterprise (SME) customers surged, I was trusted to help lead solutioning and integration, spotting common feature needs and integration challenges. That inspired me to create a playbook to streamline future onboarding for both customers and my fellow Solutions Engineers.

What helped you level up so quickly? Any habits, mindset, or support from others that made a difference?

My own curiosity and sense of ownership have been the biggest drivers of my growth. I go the extra mile to master every facet of payments. I tap my network, study competitors’ APIs and product functionality, and stay plugged into fintech news (shoutout to the Acquired podcast episode on Visa).

When something isn’t clear, I ask the “dumb” questions until I know exactly how and why it works.

The millennial in me loves taking ownership of my work and growth. To me, this means using our own tools, APIs, and SDKs to experience things through the customer’s eyes. That hands-on approach helps me understand challenges from their perspective and think proactively about solutions.

How has your role created opportunities for you to make a meaningful impact for clients—not only in the US, but globally?

My role has given me the opportunity to make a meaningful impact for clients both in the US and worldwide. For example, when I noticed that the US onboarding requirements were the smoothest for a certain user group, I worked closely with the product and legal teams to identify ways to bring the EU and UK experiences closer to that same standard. As a result, customers in those regions now benefit from a more seamless process, boosting overall experience and satisfaction globally.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to make a difference at Airwallex?

My advice is simple: Take on the most challenging projects. You’ll become the expert on a complex part of the product and can speak about it thoroughly. Pretty soon, people across the company will come to you for clarity and guidance whenever that topic arises. Airwallex still has that startup spirit and gives you autonomy to work on problems you’re passionate about. It’s in your hands to decide how much impact you want to have in the company, so take it!
