About the Role
We are looking for skilled Staff Software Engineer to help shape and evolve Airwallex’s edge infrastructure—covering API gateway, CDN, DNS, global accelerators, and perimeter security systems. This is a high-impact engineering role focused on designing and delivering critical components of our global edge platform.
As a Senior Engineer, you’ll lead scoped initiatives, drive system-level improvements, and partner with platform, product, and InfoSec teams to enhance performance, resilience, and security. You’ll operate at the intersection of infrastructure and security, ensuring traffic entering Airwallex is fast, secure, and governed by clear engineering standards.
In this role, you will:
🌐Own and Deliver Key Edge Systems

Lead design and implementation of edge networking components such as:

API Gateways (routing, throttling, transformation)
-
CDN caching and invalidation policies
-
DNS zone management and global resolution setup
-

Partner with infra and SRE teams to ensure scalability, availability, and maintainability
🔐 Implement and Improve Border Security
-
Develop and maintain rate limiting, WAF, firewall, and bot mitigation policies
-
Work with Infosec to roll out detection and protection rules across providers (Cloudflare, AWS WAF, Tencent GAAP, etc.)

Instrument and measure edge protections for reliability and effectiveness
📦 Contribute to API Exposure and Governance

Help develop internal tooling for API route registration and review

Implement policy checks for route naming, versioning, authentication, and traffic tiering

Support onboarding of teams to edge policies and route lifecycle processes
🚦 Improve Performance and Resilience at Scale

Tune configurations for routing, caching, failover, and latency optimization
-
Analyze traffic patterns and propose system improvements for core services (e.g., payments, onboarding)

Contribute to multi-region and multi-provider edge deployments
What We’re Looking For
Technical Skills
-
Strong experience in one or more areas of edge networking:
-
API gateways (e.g. Envoy, NGINX/OpenResty, Kong, Apisix)
-
CDN management and performance tuning
-
DNS routing and global traffic optimization
-
-
Hands-on with cloud networking services (AWS, GCP, Cloudflare, etc.)
-
Familiar with WAF, firewall rules, rate limiting, and traffic classification
-
Working knowledge of service mesh, Kubernetes ingress controllers, and infra-as-code (Terraform, Helm, etc.)
Engineering and Execution Skills
-
Able to lead scoped technical initiatives and deliver working systems

Strong debugging, systems thinking, and code review capabilities
-
Experience working across teams to linkalign on requirements and rollout plans

Comfortable writing design documents and collaborating with infra and security peers
Bonus

Experience working on regulated or high-security environments

Exposure to multi-cloud edge and global failover strategies

Mandarin fluency and experience in distributed/global engineering teams
