About the team

Payment Acceptance (PA) Risk Operations at Airwallex is a critical line of defence that protects our merchants, partners and the wider payments ecosystem. Within PA Risk Ops, the Merchant Risk Monitoring (MRM) team is responsible for ongoing monitoring of merchant behaviour post‑onboarding – across fraud, credit and brand risk – and for ensuring merchants stay within card scheme and Airwallex risk thresholds.

The team works closely with Credit Risk Operations, Consumer Fraud Risk Operations, Product, Data and Commercial teams to balance risk mitigation with a great merchant experience.

What you’ll do

You’ll help protect Airwallex and our merchants by running holistic risk reviews on our Business Seller segment, using data, documentation and investigative tools to assess fraud, credit and brand risk.

You’ll work from risk queues, monitor fraud and dispute trends, partner with merchants on remediation plans, and continuously improve how we manage merchant risk at scale.

This role is based in Sydney or Melbourne.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess Fraud, Credit, and Brand Risk: Determine and apply risk exposure calculation methodologies on existing merchants using business credit reports, financial statements, KYB information and investigative research tools.

  • Monitor Credit, Fraud and Dispute Trends: Support ongoing monitoring of fraud, dispute and chargeback metrics, identify emerging risks, and recommend appropriate mitigations for higher‑risk merchants and segments.

  • Collaborate with Merchants: Work directly with merchants on chargeback or dispute solutions, explain key risk drivers, and provide guidance on best practices and risk performance improvement plans.

  • Improve Risk Products and Policies: Provide structured feedback and suggestions to enhance merchant risk‑related products, rules, policies and processes, partnering with Risk Product, Risk Policy and Data teams where needed.

  • Enhance Operational SOPs and Training: Contribute to the continuous improvement of SOPs, playbooks and training materials so that merchant risk monitoring decisions are consistent, efficient and well‑documented.

  • Queue Management: Oversee daily queue management of merchant risk monitoring cases, meet SLAs, analyse alert and lead quality, and review decision accuracy to drive better operational outcomes.

Who you are

We’re looking for people who meet the minimum requirements for this role. The preferred qualifications are great to have, but are not mandatory.

Minimum qualifications:

  • At least 2 years’ experience in fraud operations, credit risk, transaction monitoring, chargeback/dispute processing, merchant risk or a related risk operations role (e.g. in fintech, payments, banking, card issuer/acquirer or eCommerce).

  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with keen attention to detail and the ability to conduct thorough risk assessments using both quantitative metrics and qualitative information.

  • Demonstrated ability to improve processes, policies or products, such as contributing to SOPs, workflows or risk control enhancements.

  • Ability to work independently in a fast‑paced environment with minimal guidance, while exercising good judgement on when to escalate or seek input.

  • A collaborative team player, capable of learning new concepts quickly and sharing knowledge with others through documentation, training or peer support.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to discuss key risk indicators and financial performance with internal stakeholders and, where needed, external partners or merchants.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Direct experience with merchant acquiring risk, including fraud, credit or brand risk, and/or hands‑on exposure to chargeback and dispute handling processes.

  • Familiarity with payment processing, card scheme rules and dispute/chargeback thresholds from a merchant or acquirer perspective.

  • Experience working with risk and analytics tools (e.g. case management systems, BI dashboards, fraud engines or chargeback platforms).

  • Experience with SQL or similar querying tools to deep‑dive into merchant and transaction data (nice to have, not required).
